Does Sex Have A Place On TV?

Almost every TV show or move you put on in the evening before you go to bed has a sex scene in it. Each of the sex scenes we see on TV are supposed to add something to the story and enhance it, in order to convince us to keep watching the show.

Yet people are starting to speak out about the amount of sex we show on TV and whether it is actually something we need, or if it is something shoe-horned into the story to make it “edgy”.

Does sex have a place on TV, or is it just a little too much to have a graphic sex scene in a TV show?

“Too much for me.”

The actor Billy Crystal, best known for the film ‘When Harry Met Sally’, has recently spoken out about the amount of sex scenes on TV.

“I’ve seen some stuff recently on TV in different kinds of shows where the language or the explicit sex is really, you know, sometimes I get it, and sometimes I just feel like, ‘Ah, that’s too much for me.'” He then went on to say that “Sometimes it’s just pushed a little too far for my tastes.”

I can agree with him on that. This weekend, my friend brought around a film for us to watch. Within ten minutes there had already been THREE sex scenes that each lasted at least a minute each. That’s thirty percent (at least, if they were only a minute each) of the film that we managed to actually get through. We turned it off because they were pointless and didn’t add anything to the plot. I’d even go so far as to say that they were put in purely because the director/actor wanted to film some sex scenes so the film would have a stronger reaction from the audience.

Shame he didn’t think about people just turning it off, isn’t it?

Does sex belong on TV?

So that begs the questions – does sex belong on TV at all, or should it be something reserved purely for porn and adult movies?

Sexy woman in mirrorFor me, it depends mostly on the actual story they are telling. If the scene adds something to the plot and tells you more about a character, I don’t see any reason not to. However, if it is just put in there so people can talk about the fact there is a sex scene, it is best being left out.

How graphic the sex scene is can also have an impact on the show. If it is unnecessarily graphic then again it can be a little too much. There needs to be a balance between what is acceptable and what isn’t.

To be honest, I don’t pay much attention to TV shows when there are sex scenes. Most of the time, they can tell what they are trying to tell in another way, and they are doing it in this particular way because that is how it has become. Sex is a part of our lives, but it still gets shoved in our faces on the little and big screen. It’s becoming a little overwhelming.

What do you think? Is TV the best place for sex? Is there a balance between what sex is and isn’t acceptable? You can let us know what you think about this by leaving a comment down below, or by heading over to the Escort Sweden forum.
